What Are The Long Term Effects Of Bells' Palsy?
The prognosis is very good.
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thank you for posting your query.
I am Dr Sudhir Kumar, Neurologist, and would try my best to help you.
Lower motor neuron 7th nerve palsy, also referred to as Bells' palsy, is a safe disease, and has a very good prognosis. It recovers completely within one month, in about 75% of patients. Another 20% patients recover within the next two-three months. Only about 5% patients are left with partial residual weakness.
Regarding the chance of recurrence, it recurs in only about 2-3% of patients, especially those with diabetes mellitus or vasculitis.
I hope my answer helps. Please get back if you have any follow up queries or if you require any additional information.
Wishing you good health,
Dr Sudhir Kumar MD (Internal Medicine), DM (Neurology) XXXXXXX Consultant Neurologist
