What Are The Long Term Side Effects Of Omeprazole?

default
Posted on Thu, 8 Jun 2017
Question: I have a stomach conditional that creates bile every time I eat. My doctor said it is a worn sphincter (?) valve at the base of my stomach or asophogus. I am 75. He said the answer is surgery or taking one anti-acid each day before breakfast for life. He chose the latter. because he said the surgery is a major undertaking. Is there any long-term side-effect of this I should be aware of? My email address is YYYY@YYYY .

Brief Answer:
PPI's are very safe for long term use.Much better then surgery at 75.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for query.
Most likely your symptoms are because of Gatro esophageal reflux disease (GERD),It is a chronic digestive disease. GERD occurs when stomach acid or, occasionally, stomach content, flows back into your food pipe (due to incompetent sphincter at the junction of stomach and esophagus). The backwash irritates the lining of your esophagus and causes, heart burn, chest pain and intense burning sensation in throat. Both acid reflux and heart burn are a part of GERD.The presence of gastritis has proved additive to your symptoms.
Advice
Keep on taking omeprazole i don't think surgery at 75 is a good option a number of medications are available to treat GERD and esophageal reflux effectively so don't worry about that. You may ask you Gastro to add Domepridome 30mg slow release once daily,This will slow down the reflux of acid back and would provide symptomatic relief. An antacid containing local anaesthetic could be added to drug regimen.

Now comming to your question.Proton pump inhibitors are one of the safest class of medications available in market.Though on google you can see a number of side effects but in reality they are very unlikely and are seen very rarely.
So you can keep taking it.
Much safer option then surgery.

Hope i answered your query well.
In case you need further explaination feel free to ask.

Regards.
