What Are The Possible Repercussions Of Accidentally Swallowing Broken Glass?
Around 48 hours back i had a bottle of fanta from a glass bottle which accidently broke while opening...the upper part of it though...very little...i didnot notice it while taking the first sip which i swallowed..
while taking the second sip i felt broken glass on my lips and i immediately threw out the liquid in my mouth i coughed out a small piece of glass about the size of a pencil tip and a few small pieces of glass dust from my mouth....however after that i washed my mouth for 2 times with water....i didnot go to the ER as i rwad on the internet that the best solution for this would be to wait and watch....now i dont feel anything stuck on my throat and i have been eating and drinking normally...
but just recently i started developing a small pain around my navel region and i am having loose motion now my stool is bright yellow in colour and i can hear gas noises from my navel area...i dont follow a healthy so such stomuch problems are very common to me...and i should mention here that i am a patient of GERD....which troubles me quite a bit....i have a very bad condition of piles as well and bleed almost regularly in the washroom....the blood which comes out is very bright in colour and i havent noticed dark coloured stool in the last 2 days....i am worried that what if a accidently swallowed a small piece of glass like the size of a pencil tip....and a few pieces of small glass dust can it cause me any harm...? is the pain in the navel region with loose motion a symptomof any internal injury made by the glass? should ER room urgently or can i wait till morning? what are the possible dangers i can have from swallowing a piece of glass which is that small? please reply urgently...i must mention that i am have had similar kinds of pain many times before in my life...from gas and food poisoning and i am feeling better with time...
Your symptoms are unlikely to be due to glass piece swallowed
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome to healthcare magic.
I am Dr Ramadevi Wani.
I will be answering your concerns today.
Since this incident happened two days ago, even if a small piece of glass is swallowed, in all probability it has passed out of your body.
Usually a pencil tip size glass piece is unlikely to cause problem.
The pain in the naval region with loose motions that you have is probably due to indigestion or intestinal infection.
If the glass piece is large enough rarely it can cause injury/tear to oesophagus, stomach or intestine. In that case the pain would be acute and it would have worsened with time. It would have also caused difficulty in swallowing/ blood in stools.
So it is unlikely that the symptoms you have are due to the small glass piece swallowed. Since you are feeling better with time, you can definitely wait till morning to see the doctor.
Consult your doctor in the morning, so that you can be treated for loose motions.
I hope this helps.
If you have further queries, I will be happy to answer
