What Are The Repercussions Of Leaving A Tampon On For 5 Days?

default
Posted on Tue, 29 Dec 2015
Question: I just realized I left a tampon in for maybe more than 4-5 days. I had put other tampons under it, and it was up high and "lost". After my period stopped, I noticed continual brown discharge and an increasing strong odor. Today I noticed a slight cramping in my stomach. It dawned on me and I was able to remove the old tampon about 15 minutes ago. But now I'm extremely afraid of TSS. I have no symptoms of infection other than the odor. I had some mild fatigue days ago that I attributed to the heavy blood loss. What are the chances that I have TSS or a serious/probelmatic issue? Since I have no fever, chills, or ther symptoms, can I just let this clear up on it's own? I consume a strong, homemade probiotic kefir daily. Will this be sufficient enough to balance my immunity/flora? Could I use some vaginally to help?

Brief Answer:
May lead to severe infection. Needs medications as described!

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for consulting and your trust in HCM means a lot to me as a Physician.
I have completely reviewed your health query, and well realize all those concerns. Being your physician, I will take care all of them today and will extend my expertise to solve the problems.

It can't be said with surety about you to get TSS. But one thing is clear that you may get bacterial infection. TSS is a very rare condition and before getting it, the patient gets Bacterial Vaginosis that is a less serious condition compared to TSS and is well manageable in the first place before the bacteria disseminated and gets entered the general circulation causing Septicemia and TSS.

What you need to do ahead:-
If I was your treating Physician I must have prescribed you with Clindamycin, Metronidazole, Ibuprofen, and Omeprazole. Apply Clotrimazole/Hydrocortisone vaginal cream to apply inside vagina.

You may consult your OBGYN for prescription of the medications. You're taking only the probiotic and that isn't enough for sure, and it is risky to leave the situation as such. Don't apply that into the vagina as you asked for to do. Prophylactic medical management is the best option right away. Follow the instructions please.

Hope I answered all of your queries. Let me know if you have further clinical concerns or doubts. I will be more than happy to get back to you.
