What Are The Repercussions Of Skin Coming In Contact With 0.5mg IV Dialysis?
Question: I am a nurse and today I put 0.5mg of iv dialysis in my pocket to waste it at a later time. I got busy and somehow the syringe opened and it got all over my pocket of my scrubs and was against my skin. I have a drug test for a new job next week and am wondering if this could affect it at all. I know it sounds paranoid but they don't know me from XXXXXXX and I really want the job so I don't wanna risk this. Thanks so much!
Brief Answer:
No worries here.
Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome,
There are buffers and electrolytes and possibly a preservative in hemodialysate fluid, but there is not usually any type of narcotic or regulated substances in it. If there were, it would have street value.
Further, 10% or less of the substances that touch our skin are absorbed systemically.
So I don't think there is anything to worry about here, but if you want to be extra sure, you can send me a list of ingredients in the particular dialysate product. You can skip listing the bicarbonate and other things that you and I know won't affect a drug test - just list the things you aren't sure about.

I dont know how this got changed to dialysis. It was dialudid. I am almost positive it doesnt absorb through the skin but its a potent drug and i juat dont want any surprises next week. Thanks again
Brief Answer:
Still - no worries.
Detailed Answer:
Liquid Dilaudid is hydromorphone, and I found under information for health professionals to give to patients that states that liquid hydromorphone can be absorbed through skin. See here https://www.question.com/medication/dilaudid.html
See 4th paragraph under How Should I Use Hydromorphone.
That's the bad news. The good news is that hydromorphone has a half life of approximately 3 hours, so it should be out of your system next week.
So - I don't think you have anything to worry about. Good luck with your new job!
