What Are The Repercussions Of Stopping Levothyroxine After Thyroidectomy?
![default](/r/images/default.png)
Question: My 39 year old son had his thyroid gland and many lymph nodes removed 8 years ago. He had follow up radioactive treatment. He has not been to see an oncologist or endocrinologist for over 3 years. He was taking his levothyroxine intermittently and now has stopped taking it completely. (at least 3 months). I already know that he does not want to live, and since he is not "a danger to himself or others" the 'authorities' will not intervene. What should I expect will happen with his physical/emotional condition? He has very little strength/energy. Thanks for any information you can give me....
Brief Answer:
Hello dear. There is a chance of relapse.
Detailed Answer:
Hello dear. welcome to HCM. I have read the details.
Although its 8 years since the treatment, the levothyroxine treatment must be continued to suppress the TSH which acts as a trophic stimulus for the growth of tumor.
There is a possibility that it might relapse even after so many years if levothyroxine is stopped.
He must be motivated enough so that he should continue his levothyroxine.
You must meet a psychologist for the counselling in this regard.
Thanks and regards
