What Are The Side Effects Of Amiodarone?

Question: Hello: I am an 86 year old lady and I have been having what the Drs. thought was Atrial Flutter. However, last Tues. they attempted to do an ablation in the heart and even tho they tried a number of times, were unable to get the heart to go into the flutter. Therefore, they were unable to do the ablation. My question has to do with the medication that has been prescribed for me, which is the Amiodarone l00 mg--l tab daily. I am unsure if I even want to start taking this when I read all of the terrible side effects. What experience have you had with patients taking this medication. Do you think I am over concerned re: the side effects?

Dear Mrs,

You are right, amiodaron has many side effects. But they are not seen frequently. I have many patients receiving amiodaron for years and don't have any side effects.
You have been prescribed low dose amiodaron, so probability of side effects is less.
In my patients I prescribe amiodaron and do close follow-up, if there is a side effect we find our very soon, so there is no harm. I never had serious side effect with amiodaron
