Hi,I am Dr. Prabhakar Koregol (Cardiologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I just purchased an elliptical machine but I'm concerned that exercise may trigger my Afib. I've been cardioverted a number of times and had one ablation. Had the ablation a year and a half ago, and I now get Atrial flutter as the result. I'm gently easing my way into an exercise program. I'm 49 years old and want to lose weight plus benefit from a cardio workout.
I understand your concern and would explain that physical activity, as well as psychological stress or caffeine intake, can trigger atrial fibrillation in susceptible persons.
Coming to this point, I would recommend performing a cardiac exercise stress test in order to exclude possible coronary artery disease.
I would also recommend checking thyroid hormone levels for possible thyroid gland dysfunction.
Regarding workout, I would recommend avoiding straining physical activity. Consulting with a dietitian can help you lose some weight.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Ilir Sharka,
Cardiologist
