What Are The Side Effects Of Co-codamol And Paracetamol Together?
Question: I take codamol 30/500 mg two tablets 4 times daily. I am given 200 tablets for one month which means going without for the rest of the month. The effects are now not so effective and tramadol tried but stopped as caused blackouts. The pharmacist has suggested paracetamol to top up the codamol which GP has agreed to if I ensure I do not overdose on it. 1. Is it usual to have liver function test to test for liver issues caused by this drug combination. 2. What other conditions are liver function tests used for and does this include alcoholism. I do not drink alcohol but on 2 occasions recently I have had 2 glasses of XXXXXXX to help sleep as GP refuses to give night sedation and poor sleep due to physical pain and low mood.

1.Well, as per your medications Co codamol already has 500 mg paracetamol. And you taking 2gms a day already, I won't suggest we top more paracetamol on that.. that would be 3gms a day.. Although not in a toxic range it is still in the higher side, when taken on continuous basis.
2. Routinely liver function tests are not recommended with codeine and paracetamol, but if you are on 3gms daily then I would suggest you monitor it monthly.
3. there are many other conditions we monitor liver function tests. Since you mentioned you have Rheumatoid arthritis, I would like to know if you are taking any medications for it. That is one of the conditions we monitor liver test frquently
4.If you had ask me, a glass of wine every now and then is a better option than so much of paracetamol., but yes as long as you don't overuse it.
5. as for your pain control, with so many comorbitdities it is possible you have developed chronic pain syndrome. A pain modulator would be a better choice in your case, something like duloxetine or amitryptilline. It will help in mood, sleep and the pain
