Question: My father aged 86 years uses medication for blood pressure, diabetes and lately hypothyroidism. Suspected minor heart block but unable to undergo angiography due to high creatinine levels of up to 4. Recently he has been prescribed with ketoalpha tablets thrice a day tablets but here some to be reluctance from pharmacist to provide this. I am keen to know if this is banned for any reason has any adverse side effects.

Brief Answer:
Can be used , no harm

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear.Welcome and thanks for posting the query on HCM.

Alphaketo analagoues(AKA's) have been prescribed along with a low protein diet(0.3g/kg body wt) especially to prevent the damage to kidney due to faulty protein metabolism. Thus this improves the kidney function.

Kidney function improves due to low protein diet according to most studies and AKA's have been used though there is no conclusive evidence.

They can be used and if you intend to go ahead keep a watch on serum calcium levels(levels may increase) and serum albumin(may fall) to avoid hypercalcemia and protein deficiency.

Hope this answers your query.
