Question: Hi!
I only have 1 kidney (was born that way) and get migraines with auras. As a result, I can't take birth control pills or too many NSAIDs. Would it be safe for me to start using mefenamic acid for severe menstrual cramps or are there better, safer alternatives? What are some of the side effects/risks of using mefenamic acid?

Hi,
Mephenamic acid is an NSAIDs. It is not indicated in patients with renal problems. In your case, if your kidney is functioning properly, you might be take up to 2 tabs per day during the days of severe cramps, and non more. Thus, it won't give any problem to you.
Some of the side effects/risks of using mephenamic acid include:
- GI problems: diarrhea/constipation, bloating,
- Neurological: dizziness, nervousness, etc.
- General: fever, flu-like symptoms, etc.
Once again, if taken in therapeutic doses (as shown above), you won't have such problems. However, I advise to observe for any unusual symptom.
