What Are The Side Effects Of Nitrofurantoin?

Question: What causes these side effects of Nitrofurantoin :fever, lower back pain, muscle and joint pain in the legs, headache, chills, tightness in chest and pain on inspiration, and malaise and is there anything that needs to be done other than stopping the medication? The med was prescribed 100mg twice a day and was taken for 5 days with side effect symptoms appearing on day 5 but becoming severe on day 6. No doses were taken on day 6.

Hi,

Usually when nitrofurotoin is given it tries to stop infection in the body. In this process body produces agents which can act on infection and reduce it. In sensitive people these agents acts on normal muscles also.

So they cause very mild damage to muscles and cause pain in various muscle groups. This is the cause fever and chills and other of your side effects.

Don't worry stopping the drug is the treatment. The damage will heal soon. If pain is severe then you may take pain killer like aceclofenac and multivitamin which helps to reduce these damaging agents.
