What Are The Side Effects Of Diptheria And Tetanus Vaccinations?
I was wondering about side effects for my daughter's vaccinations. She has a sore stomach which my wife is convinced happened after she received her vaccinations, but I have doubts about this. She hasd them 3 weeks ago. We live in Azerbaijan. She has a doctor recommended by my wife's aunt, though we went to a larger better equipped facility for these vaccinations. My personal opinion is that the doctor is unhappy about this and wants to keep control about what happens to her patient. Had she spoken to me the way she spoke to my wife back in the UK, I would have dealt with it but I am a little out of my element in a foreign country. The vaccines she had were against diptheria, tetanus, rotavirus, hep B and pertussis. The week before she did received polio drops from her family doctor, who now says we shouldn't have gone for the rest. I am struggling to understand as these 5 in 1's are done over the world and often contain vaccines against polio. What are the likely implications of side effects after and for how long and what exent? Personally I think my daughter has some excess gas, and just suffers from a slightly sore stomach. She spits out her milk a bit but I saw this as quite normal and she is putting on weight. My wife puts a lot of faith in her doctor as it was her auntie's one and she has severe mistrust of others even though I feel more comfortable in the better equipped hospital and try to convince her that these doctors cannot afford to give vaccinations and get it wrong if our daughter is really unwell. Í would appreciate any advice on the likelihood of this being any side effect from vaccinations.
Thanks and Best Regards,

Abdominal soreness unrelated to vaccines
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome to Healthcare-Magic
Greetings of the day
Dear Mr XXXXXXX
All these vaccines are safe and do not produce long duration stomach upset as side effects.
Let me explain each vaccine in detail
1. Diptheria : It is a toxoid vaccine. The major side effect will be local side effect in form of redness or swelling
2. Pertusis : The component used is either deactivated whole bacterial cell or acellular vaccine( after removing the cell membrane of bacteria). The major side effect is local like redness. Prolonged crying could also be seen especially with whole cell vaccine
3. Tetanus: Its again a toxoid vaccine. It is very safe.Abdominal side effects are unknown
4. Hepatitis B: It contains surface antigen and is safe. Common complication is again local redness
5. Rota virus: Its a live attenuated vaccine consisting of weakened rotavirus which prevents diarrhoea caused by rota virus. Occasional they may cause mild gastric disturbance lasting for a day or two. It does not cause persistent side effect related to abdomen.
In my opinion none of the vaccines cause any prolonged abdominal side effects.
Do get back to me if you need any further assistance, will be glad to assist you.

Thank you very much for your reply. Your answer makes sense to me.
One vaccine I missed off the list was Haemopihilus Influenzea type B. Is this similar to above?
On a side note, though this was administered at an earlier time from the doctor who advised against other vaccinations, what are the side effects of the oral polio vaccine? I understand this is not used at home anymore, but it is adminstered here.
The doctor has stated that my daughter has suffered from a lack of oxygen. Whilst I accept she did at one point have a very slight tinge of blue on her lips, it didn't seem to prevent her from living normally and she's had all appearances of a healthy child. She was given a vaccination at birth from the hospital and has since been given others without concern about this. For my clarity of mind, however, if a child has what must be a minor problem in lacking oxygen, how would that impact the danger in receiving these vaccinations?
Thanks and Best Regards,

Oral Polio vaccine can be safely given
Detailed Answer:
Dear Mr XXXXXXX
Thanks for writing back to me.
Human Influenza B vaccine is a different vaccine known as HiB vaccine and is also equally safe. There should not be any problem regarding it.
Bluish discolouration of lips is known as cyanosis. If cardiac abnormality has been ruled out its unlikely to be due to significant cause. Excessive crying or tantrums in normal child could also lead to occasional appearance of cyanosis.
Presence of cyanosis is not an contra-indication to oral polio vaccine. Oral polio vaccine is live attenuated vaccine which has large safety and is unlikely to have any serious adverse effects. Occasional cyanosis is not a contra-indication for vaccination. Only absolute contra-indication for polio vaccine as with any other live vaccine is Immunodeficiency. In my personal opinion (majority of Paediatrician would agree to it) you can safely go ahead with immunization.
