What Are The Side Effects Of Upper Gastrointestinal Series Procedure?
Question: I need to have an upper gi series tomorrow, what should i expect? Is this test harmful and does it have side effects?
Brief Answer:
Friendly and few side effects!
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
This is one of the most commonly performed procedures by gastroenterologist. Though complications are possible, they are very rare. Some include perforation of the esophagus, bleeding, etc. After the procedure, you may have some nausea and vomiting and that's all. There is really nothing much to be worried about as it concerns this test.
I wish you well. Let me know how it goes. Feel free to follow up if need be.

Why perforation? It is an upper gi series barium swallow.. Xrays.. Im worried about the barium swallow and side effects.
Brief Answer:
Am sorry!
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
I had rather talked about upper GI endoscopy. Am sorry for the mix up!
The barium meal is of no extra harm. It is a liquid meal with rare side effects. There have been a few cases of intolerance such as diarrhea or vomiting after ingestion. None of these is serious enough to have endangered the life of anyone.
X-rays would be of minimal exposition. There is nothing to be too scared of as regards this.

Ok great! Im doing this test because ive had a sour/bitter taste in my mouth for 3 weeks. Do you think this exam would be helpful?
Brief Answer:
Wouldn't have been my first line test!
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Bitter sour taste is often caused by acid reflux. Drugs, endoscopy, then barium meals and not otherwise. It is programmed already and I will suggest that you carry on and share the findings with me.
Cheers!
