
What Are The Signs And Symptoms Of A Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome?

I am Nischita M, 28 years old, married for 2 years. I have put on a lot of weight off late. I am 5ft tall and according to my height, my weight should lie from 50-54kgs but I weigh 62kgs now. I used to take contraceptive pill(i pill) whenever we indulged in unsafe sex. I had come across in one of the blog that consuming contraceptive pill promotes weight gain. I have got my thyroid test done and the result lies within normal range only. And now I am trying to cut down the extra weight and I am following a strict healthy diet for more than a month but there seems to be no change in my weight. My weight hasnt reduced even by 500g. Does the weight gain due to consuming contraceptive pill rigid and doesnt that cut down fastly? Is there any other cause which is obstructing and effecting the diet plan. How do I find out? Should I undergo any other tests.to find out what exactly is happening. Kindly Advise.

Your picture seems to fit in the diagnosis of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS).
PCOS is a condition in which the eggs get trapped in the ovaries and are not released every month. This makes the ovary polycystic. Characteristic symptoms of this condition are irregular heavy menses, infertility, obesity, round face, coarse hair on the unwanted places of the body like face, chest, abdomen, legs, etc. All the symptoms may not be seen in the initial stages. Obesity or weight gain is very difficult to control with casual attempts.
Your BMI is definitely high; it is 26.4. So you are in the higher weight group; though not obese. 23.9 is the higher limit for normal BMI for western women. For XXXXXXX women, it has to be still on the lower side.
Since your Thyroid function tests are within normal limit, the possibility of PCOS is very high. As an initial investigation, please get your ultrasonography done to get any evidence of Polycystic Ovary. Please upload the images and reports of your ultrasonography for my review. After seeing the reports, I might advise you some hormonal profile.
Till that, currently concentrate on your diet control. Your diet should be rich in proteins and have very low carbohydrates and fats in your diet. Include fresh fruits and green leafy boiled vegetables. You will get good proteins from bean sprouts, legumes, pulses, etc.. If you eat meat, any meat is good source of protein, however it should not be spicy with oil or fried. Tandoor chicken gives good fat free protein.
You should exercise daily with the advice of a physiotherapist. In addition to the stretching Gym exercises, you should walk at least for 40 minutes at a stretch twice a day (morning/evening) at a pace of 90 steps/minute. Swimming and cycling are very good exercises. You should take care not to eat more after the exercises since they make you more hungry. Hence, first have a control on the diet and then start exercising.
Please get yourself checked for diabetes also. PCOS is associated with high insulin and male hormones levels. However, I shall advise about those aspects later once you upload the advised investigations.
