What Are The Symptoms Of ADD?

Diagnosis is made if behavior occurs in two or more settings, not one parent's observations.
I observed rapid eye movements and head adjustment by this child. I had never seen this before and learned that his mother observed that he " was talking under his breath" and requested medication.
He achieves above grade level, plays well with friends, plays chess and builds model airplanes, excels at sports and plays well with others.
He has a younger brother who sometimes demolishes what the older brother has built, but the older brother never retaliates.
He was put on medication by primary.
My husband and I observed no symptoms of ADD. After working in a school setting for 25 years I had often seen a parent request a medication for a child who had appropriate behavior in all areas at school.
The referring parent here has been ill for a long period of time and seems to respond negatively to one grandchild who is now medicated.
Intervention? The father goes along with diagnosis. He seems overwhelmed by the care of his wife, children, and profession.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for asking on this platform
I completely understand your concern and agree with you.
ADHD is a condition of inattention and distractibility with or without hyperactivity and a number of diagnostic criteria must be fulfilled that too in two different settings for making the diagnosis of ADHD.
A careful observation by parents and teacher both at home and school must be done.In case they find any abnormal finding the condition should be discussed with a child psychiatrist before starting any intervention.
Overuse of medication is very common now a days because of over concerned parents and inappropriate evaluation.
I have gone through the details and none of the symptoms are suggestive of ADHD.
It is important for you to take his father into confidence and convince him for evaluation of the child by a child psychiatrist for proper evaluation and management accordingly if needed.
I hope this helps.
Please let me know if you have any more query.
Wish you and your family good health.
