Brief Answer:
Bipolar disorder or agitated depression.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Welcome to HCM.

Technically, there is no term called manic depression. I think what he would have meant could be either bipolar disorder or agitated depression.

In bipolar disorder, there are phases of mania alternating with depression.
Mania is the state of excessive happiness, extravagant behavior, increased talkativeness and racing thoughts. Depression is just reverse of it and has symptoms of sad mood, hopelessness, helplessness and worthlessness.

Agitated depression is a form of depression in which the person is irritable most of the time with all other features of depression.

Do you feel that you have any of the above symptoms?

Hope these details help you to find your answers.
Feel free to ask further if you need more clarification.
