Detailed Answer:
Hello!
Welcome to HealthcareMagic!
Myopathy is a muscle disease. This means that the affected part is the muscle itself and the disease doesn't affect the nervous system or the neuromuscular junction.
The term myopathy involves a large number of diseases with different causes.
Myopathy can result from genetic abnormalities, toxins, inflammation, infection, and hormonal and electrolyte imbalances. These factors in one way or another cause damages in the structure or function of muscular fiber (myopathy).
Despite the large number of specific disease in the large group of Myopathies ,the signs and symptoms are similar.
Most myopathies manifest with :
-Weakness involving primarily the proximal muscles (muscles of the shoulders, upper arms, thighs, and pelvis). In this case the patient might experience difficulty rising from chairs, getting out of the bathtub, climbing stairs, shaving or combing the hair.
The distal muscles (hands and feet) may be involved in advanced stage(handwriting problems, walking difficulties etc).
-Muscle pain and tenderness .The patient may experience pain ,cramping tenderness and stiffness in the affected muscles.
-General fatigue
-In muscle disease is characteristic that patients don't have any problem with sensation (no numbness or tingling sensations). They don't have any sensory complaints.
The onset and progression of the symptoms are specific for different muscle disease and help to identify the cause for e.x:
-if it is congenital the problem with appear in childhood and the progression is slow,
- In polymyositis, endocrine myopathy symptoms will develop over weeks,
-In Dermatomyositis symptoms will develop over days etc.
Each of these diseases have other specific symptoms and findings that help for the diagnosis.
