Dear Doctor XXXXXXX , I got the chance to have my brother report of CT and I would like to have your opinion if 2009 CT ( attached ) has a relation or lead to the lung nodules or not ?? since our doctor think it would be related to past infection. thanks and best regards
XXXX
Rare possibility that nodule is from 2009 infection
Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for your appreciation and writing back with an update.
Hope you and your brother are doing well.
The CT scan report dated 2009 shows possibility of a pneumonia like infection in the left lung lower lobe anterior basal segment with airway thickening seen in few areas. This infection happened in an area that is next to the apex of heart and is in an area that is completely different from the pleural based lung nodule which is seen in the present CT scan dated 2015. The infection in 2009 was in left lung lower lobe and the present nodule is in the left lung upper lobe.
The chances of the 2009 infection to be causing the present nodule is rare, the only possibility being that the infection subsequently (from the left lung lower lobe) reached the left lung upper lobe and is now seen as a healed nodule due to scarring.
Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for your appreciation and writing back with an update.
A lymph node is part of the immune system. The immune system itself is a protective mechanism of our body and whenever any infection occurs, then the immune system is activated. When the immune system is activated, it causes the lymph nodes nearest to the infection area to enlarge and release white blood cells to fight the infection. For a lymph node in chest to be clinically significant, it has to be 10 mm in size. Lymph nodes are always present through out the life of a person and remain small in size. However when a person has a infection or cancer then the lymph node grows in size.
In context of your brother, there is a slight possibility that the nodule that is visualized is a lymph node. Such lymph nodes can be present in the lungs and this is a common finding on routine CT examinations of healthy patients.
Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.

Dr.Vivek
