- Wide variety of viruses can cause hepatitis and their symptoms can varies from mild asymptomatic presentation to more severe and fatal liver failure.
- There are two phases of clinical features of hepatitis that is 1) Pre icteric phase & 2) icteric phase
- 1) Pre icteric phase (Phase of pre-jaundice) : includes malaise, myalgia, fatigue and mild fever. Also there is non-specific gastrointestinal symptoms like loss of appetite, fatigue, abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting, other symptoms like cough, pharyngitis, constipation, diarrhea can also occur.
- 2) Icteric phase (Phase of jaundice): jaundice (with associated anorexia, nausea and fatigue), in a minority of patients with itching and deep jaundice, dark urine and pale stools (before onset of jaundice), tender hepatomegaly, pruritus, fever is not present during this phase, fulminant hepatitis may occur rarely (<1%)
