stop one by one under doctor's supervision
Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX
Thanks for writing back to us.
Stablon 12.5 mg is low dose. If he is better since more than 6 months in depression, stablon can be taken half (6.25 mg) for 20 days and then stopped.
Baclofen as such is muscle relaxant. It can be decreased 10 mg every 15 days.
Both of these drugs are not associated with withdrawals with slow tapering.
Stressnil 0.5 mg contains alprazolam. It may be difficult to stop it suddenly. It should be continued until other two medicines completely stop. After than dose can be reduced to 0.25 mg for 1 month before stopping and simultaneously other measures for good sleep should be followed.
I would recommend following 'sleep hygiene'.
These are some measures called which would help in sleep. You can find the same in below link.
sleepfoundation.org/ask-the-expert/sleep-hygiene
Drinking a cup of warm milk before going to bed helps in 30-40% of patients and they do not need medicines as per my clinical experience.
You can follow recommendations after discussing with his treating doctor.
Hope I have answered your query, I will be happy to help further.
Regards,
Dr.Chintan Solanki.

or both can be reduced simultaneously?
both simultaneously
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for follow up.
Both stablon and baclofen can be reduced together. Stablon will stop first and baclofen later in his case.
Feel free to discuss further.

do these antidepressants have permanent effect?
what i know is,these increases serotonin in brain which cure depression.
but what happens when a person stop taking it? how does serotonin comes then?
it very complicated and hidden phenomenon
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for your curious question.
Actually serotonin alone is not responsible factor for depression. There are lots of other neurotransmitters, hormonal, biological, genetics, psychological and social factors are involved in etiology of depression. We call it bio-psycho-social model.
In 50% of the patients with depression first episode is last episode. In remaining second episode occurs. Among them 50% have 3rd episode.
With medicines, social and psychological factors matter. In your father's case I guess alcohol is also related factor.
Drugs are not making new serotonin they just make the changes at cell level to make serotonin more effective. In many patients even after stopping the medicines these biological changes remain permanent. In other patients with other factors relative serotonin deficiency may be created again.
Your father has responded well to medicine. No need to worry. In any case by chance if he will have problem, he can be treated easily.
Ask him to maintain healthy lifestyles. This includes regular daily exercise (walking or running), hygienic food habits (no junk food, no fatty food, preferably only home-made food with law salt and fat with more fruits and vegetables) and timely scheduled sleep. Yoga- meditation can also help.
Hope this answer clarifies your doubts.
