Posted on Thu, 29 May 2014
Question: My new grandchild stopped breathing for four minutes - could that cause brain damage? The Mom had a difficult birthing process for hours. The baby seems fine - is there something we should look for>

Brief Answer:
Dull activity, frequent invlountary movements

Detailed Answer:
Hi, thanks for writing to us.

I want to know the details of the birthing history, a summary probably as to what measures were taken by the doctors when they noticed that the new born was not breathing well. By knowing the details it ll be easy to comment on the question you have posted.

But as of now your baby is a week old. If she is feeding well at the mothers breast , having a good sucking and swallowing reflexes, if the baby is active play full , sleeping well , not being very cranky and irritable then do not worry.

If you notice your baby to have frequent invoulntary jerks of the hands or the legs, the child always being dull and inactive , not sucking well at the breast then you will have to review with your doctor.

Brain damage , or asphyxial damage of the brain, the extent and intensity is hard to predict.

So if you find the above symptoms, kindly revisit your doctor, thank you , regards.

Kindly review with the birthing history.

A midwife delivered the baby and I don't know details. My son was there and the Mom just talked to her baby and rubbed her chest. I was with the baby yesterday she is nursing well, sleeps very contentedly and peacefully - no jerking movements at all, loves her bath, hardly ever cries, but I just had concerns when I heard the baby had stopped breathing for four minutes - that seems a long time.

doctor visit for better evaluation.

Detailed Answer:
Hi thanks for writing to us.

Okay sir as per your observation if the baby is active and playful then do not worry.

How ever take her to the pediatrician for a better review and check up and evaluation of her central nervous system.

Enjoy the company of the new arrival , have a good day.
