What Casues Irritation On The Soft Palate?
10 years ago, I have had an car accident and have broken my nose. Finished with septal deviation classified as mild. Due to the nose breathing problems used the xylomethazoline nasal sprays way more than it should be used, for about 5 years. 6 months ago it stopped to work, and gave me the "rhinitis medicamentosa". My right nostril is not functioning for 6 months now, due to the deviated septum and enlarged inferior turbinate. The left nostril is working almost all of the time. I have scheduled septoplasty with turbinectomy for the august this year. But, for six months now, I am experiencing the constant irritation of the upper left throat are, around soft palate most of the time. My whole left nostril inside is irritated but always opened. Feeling in the left nostril is like very cold air is going through, and the left upper throat is burning. Visiting 3 ENT doctors, have gone all of the diagnostic procedures (CT of PNS - clear, videostroboscopy of larynx - clear, nasal endoscopy of that left nostril - clear). The right nostril is closed and insufficient for the 90% of the time. So, nothing obvious is there to see, but the constant pain/burnin/irritation of the left soft palate area is still there. Is there a real possibility that this is due to the fact that I am breathing only through that left nostril all the time, so some kind of overuse is happening? Just want to find the cause while I am waiting for the septoplasty with turbinectomy to hopefully solve my problem. Also, when I speak, and I am pretty big guy and loud speaker, I feel like my voice is resonating only through that left (opened) nostril, and hurting it even more.
Best regards,

use nasal sprays
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for asking to HCM,
I have gone through your query,
You should have not used the xylometazoline nasal drops for so long (5 years).
Yes the irritation on the soft palate could be because of the left nostril overuse and right nostril blockage.
You can go ahead with surgery as planned as it is very important to open up the blocked nostril.
Till then i usually advice to my patients to use nasal sprays both normal saline spray and steroid nasal spray.
It will help in --
clearing the nose,
moistening the nose skin ,
decrease the inflammation ,
decrease the harmful effects of dry air,
open up the blocked right nostril.
These nasal sprays are not absorbed in the blood so have no side effects reported till now.
They are very safe.
You should consult your doctor and discuss for the sprays .

My ENT already prescribed me the Nasonex, but it makes my left overused nostril and back of the nose stingy (burning). Is this normal at the first days, so should I continue with it or it is the reason to discontinue? I have forgot to write, i have done he allergy testings too, and everything is clear. My blood analysis is perfect too. Only that constant overuse feeling at the whole upper left nose/throat area.
Saline irrigation is the only thing that does not hurts.
Best regards
continue with nasal sprays
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Nasonex is a good spray and you can continue with that . It gives effects after 5-6 days .
Secondly saline wash or normal saline sprays are very important even if using a steroid nasal sprays. You should continue with the saline sprays.
You can take steam inhalations before the steroid nasal sprays if it causes burning sensation.
If all other tests are normal then continue with nasal sprays it will give good relief.
The important part i always say to my patients is that if you have nasal disease the best medicine or treatment is to walk. Daily morning and evening walk is the best remedy.
In doubt do reply.
