What Casues Lower Back Pain After Taking A Testosterone Shot?

Posted on Fri, 4 Jul 2014
Question: hi, i gave myself my usual monthly testosterone shot last thursday XXXXXXX 12th. I had no problems and I believe in got the shot in the ventrogluteal area. I began having pretty bad lower back pain on saturday the 14th which has continued to today. The pain is only present when I am standing and it is decreased significantly by 800mg ibuprofen. I am training using a variation of CrossFit and more traditional strength training methods. I also have been running a 5k twice a week on soft trails. I'm 59 years old and am usually never ill or injured. This back pain has me concerned that I might have hit a nerve with the last injection.

Brief Answer:
Ibuprofen along with muscle relaxant will help

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for posting
I really appreciate your passion for sport. After studying your case carefully it is highly unlikely to hit a nerve (sciatic nerve) in your case as you do not have the following symptoms of nerve injury-
1. Numbness, tingling sensation in leg along with radiating pain from gluteal region to back of thigh and leg.
2. Weakness of muscle of leg and foot. The best way to test healthy muscle function is try to walk on your heels and toes.
Meanwhile you may take hot water fomentation, muscle relaxant drugs like metaxolone beside pain killer ibuprofen.
Hope this helps and I shall be glad to answer any further query.
Take care.
Regards

Thank you, Dr. Chugh.

I do not have any of the sciatic symptoms mentioned above. I trained hard on Friday the 13 and felt no ill effects Friday evening. It was only on Saturday the 14th that the symptoms showed up and I was in extreme pain on Sunday the 15 (scale of 1-10 with 10 being much pain, I was probably an 8 or 9). I have a very high pain tolerance, having trained and competed through muscle strains and even broken fingers, and miscellaneous cuts, bangs, and bruises. The pain persists today though ibuprofen lowers it to around a 4 or 5. the pain is mainly in the area above the injection site. I thought perhaps I had kidney issues but I have no symptoms related to that. What am I experiencing? Muscle spasms? I am going to try and train as usual for a Tuesday, later today. I'll to do a 20-30 minute metcon workout followed by a snack and then a 3.6 mile trail run. Guess I'll see how I tolerate any pain during today's training...BTW I have no insurance and no physician where I am living, so prescription muscle relaxants are not a possibility for me. Thanks again.

Brief Answer:
Ice fomentation and herbal oil may help

Detailed Answer:
Hello
It’s good to see you
After going through the whole discussion, my suggestion’s are-
1. Ice fomentation at the site of injection.
2. You may use herbal/natural substances to reduce muscle spasm and pain like lavender flower oil. This may be massaged in circular motion at sore muscle. A hot shower after the massage will help the mind and body to relax, giving the tensed muscle ample amount of time to relax and heal.
Meanwhile you may continue with Ibuprofen. I wish I could be more help to you.
If you have further rquery, please feel free to ask or you may close the present discussion.
Take care
