What Causes ASCUS On Pap Smear Test?
Question: Can sexual intercourse the night before pap test cause ASCUS results? I got an ASCUS result for 1st time in my life and i am repeating the test in 3 months. Could it be from having sexual intercourse the previous night?
Brief Answer:
yes it can affect the results
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for the query to HCM,
ASCUS on pap smear is due to cervical erosion and intercourse a day prior the pap smear can certainly have an effect of the result. Hence it would be better to repeat the test again after 3 months. Even otherwise ASCUS lesion due to an HPV infection if at all, usually subside on its own by 3-6 months and no apparent treatment is actually required besides follow up.
So you just need to be patient and next time opt for a HPV DNA co testing with pap smear.
