What Causes A Bee Sting Like Sensation In The Lower Legs?
Neuropathy vs. local irritation
Detailed Answer:
Good morning. Thank you for your note.
The sensation in the body of something which has no obvious stimulus or trigger to cause the sensation is generically referred to in neurology as a neuropathy of some type. In this case since your feeling a SENSATION of some sort then, we can call what you've described as a SENSORY NEUROPATHY. My guess is that the feeling is SHARP, STINGING, AND PAINFUL. Perhaps, even the words LANCINATING or LIGHTNING LIKE PAIN could describe what you've got.
When it is a local phenomenon as in your case....I'm always wary of some sort of a rash that could be possibly ready to break out in that area in the next few days to a week. Sometimes that happens and little blisters may begin to form following the onset of the painful stinging sensation. If it were in both limbs at the same time then, I might recommend a full blown neuropathy workup.....but it's only in one limb I tend to take a wait and see attitude.....If after 1 week or 2...nothing really happens and the pain or sensation persists then, I may choose to treat it simply for the painful sensation and then, look at doing some blood work...but usually not until then.
In the mean time, however, depending on how much this is bothering you and if it is throughout the day or not...you could do things such place ice, heat, an OTC numbing agent such as Bacteen which has a little anesthetic in it...Aloe Vera which can be soothing. But again, without knowing the cause at this point it's hard to recommend anything specific.
