What Causes A Bunch Of Small Purplish Dots On Upper Thigh?

Posted on Mon, 7 Mar 2016
Question: Hi, I woke up today and noticed a bunch of small purple-ish dots on my upper thigh. They are flat, when I touch the area it just feels like my skin. I read online this could be leukemia so I'm a little anxious. I'm a female, 24 years old and I am currently menstruating. I don't think there was any trauma to my leg, I woke up and noticed it. I also have iron deficiency anemia if that matters. The dots feel like nothing, they don't itch. They're just reddish purplish and on one thigh, not just one dot but sort of a cluster there. What could this be

Brief Answer:
Possibility of purpura

Detailed Answer:
Hello. Thank you for writing to us

I have gone through your query and I have noted your concern

These spots seem to be purpura/ petechiae. Purpura/petechiae are minute pin head sized haemorrhagic spots. Although leukemia is one of the causes of purpura however the diagnosis of leukemia is not based only on presence of a few purpuric spots. Leukemia patients have abnormalities of blood counts like thrombocytopenia and leukopenia or leukocytosis besides anemia. Therefore presence of purpura does necessitate a few basic blood investigations like complete blood counts including platelet counts, coagulation profile i.e bleeding time and clotting time, liver function tests before assuming this to be due to leukemia, straight away.

I forgot to mention that last night before I went to bed I hit my thigh really hard on a table by accident where the spots are. Could this be the cause? I completely forgot I did that until now

Brief Answer:
trauma seems the likely cause

Detailed Answer:
Hi.

Trauma can certainly be the cause and since you recall a definite history of trauma to that area then that seems the most likely cause in your case. The spots would resolve in about 2 weeks.

Brief Answer:
It is actually a bruise

Detailed Answer:
Hi. Yes, I have reviewed the Image.

It is actually a bruise and i think that it is due to trauma. I suggest you to take a Vitamin C supplement once daily for a few days.
