What Causes A Feeling Of Fullness In Upper Throat?

default
Posted on Sat, 12 Jul 2014
Question: Hi, I've had a feeling of fullness in my upper throat for 10 days now. At first it would bother me occasionally, but it has gotten a lot worse in the last two days. My ears are clogged from time to time and my jaw feels tight. I went out for a jog today and could barely catch my breath; I felt less air was coming in than usual. I have a small red dot on my inner cheek that's been there for 5+ days and my tongue has developed a white-ish coat (not fungus like) and some small reddish dots in the side. The roof of my mouth is more yellowish than usual. I do not have fever, although I feel tired (but I am also a narcoleptic so that's not unusual). I can see big, red bumps at the back of my tongue and back of my throat and some white lines and spots on my tonsils, none of which are protruding but the right one is weirdly shaped.

Brief Answer:
throat infection.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for your query.

In my opinion, you might be having infection of your tonsil along with inflammation of the tongue and buccal mucosa. The big red bumps on back of the tongue are inflammed tonsil with white spots (follicles) over the tonsil suggest that the tonsils are infected. Whitish coating over the tongue with reddish spots on the cheek suggests glosso stomatitis ,common in cases of throat infection.

If I were your treating doctor, I would have prescribed penicillin antibiotics + anti inflammatory medicines (paracetamol + diclofenac combination drugs) for 5 to 7 days. Multivitamin for 1 month with tantrum oral rinse for 15 days. I would reassess the situation after a week and take further actions accordingly.

Empirically you can take anti inflammatory medicines that are available over the counter. Plan a trip to an ENT surgeon. He/she will know about the aforementioned prescription medicines.

If this symptoms of throat infection keeps repeating for more than 3 episodes in 6 months, then surgical removal of tonsils are advised.

Hope my answers have helped you
