What Causes A Lump On The Shin?

Question: Several hours ago I saw a lump on my shin. I don't remember hitting it on anything but may have. Also have a dog that is very active about jumping on me. It is now turning a little dark like a bruise, painful and is warm. Should I worry about it or go to the emergency room or do anything for it?
