Posted on Wed, 11 May 2016
Question: Good morning doctor,
My son, 11 years, has developed some extra growth behind his right ear. It seems soft tissue or some bone I am not sure. Pain when pressing only, but sometime it pains mild automatically.

Brief Answer:
Suggestive of inflamed lymph nodes.

Detailed Answer:
Dear Ma'am, Hi & Welcome.
Thanks for posting your query on Health Care Magic.

I can understand your concern for your beloved son.
After having gone through the history and the uploaded picture I am of the opinion that your son seems to be having inflamed lymph nodes of the post auricular ('behind the ear') area. It could be due to localized infection in the scalp, external ear canal, or pinna.

However, I would like to know a few more details about them like:
1. For how long he has been having this problem?
2. Is he suffering from fever, cough, loss of appetite or weight loss?
3. Is there any other swelling in other areas like similar one on his left side, or armpit or below the chin?

Awaiting your reply so as to analyze his condition properly and to give some suggestions.
Best wishes.

Thank you doctor. This is more than 6 months now, no fever, no cough, no loss of appetite. No swelling in any another place.

Brief Answer:
Suggestive of inflamed lymph nodes.

Detailed Answer:
Dear Ma'am, Welcome back.
Thanks for your reply and the compliment.
Since the swellings are there for the last 6 months or so, he needs to be examined by a surgeon. He may need certain lab tests such as CBC, ESR, fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) of the swelling to rule out any underlying infection.
Based on the findings of the above mentioned tests further treatment would be given by the doctor.
Hope the suggestion given above would be useful in getting him treated properly.
Best wishes.
