What Causes A Painful Sore Inside The Nose Of A Child?

default
Posted on Wed, 29 Jun 2016
Question: Hello,
My son is 5 years old and complains of his nose being sore 'inside' where it goes from soft to hard bone. He also rubs the bottom of the nostrils constantly. He says it hurts but isn't more specific than that, when I look up with a torch or feel there is nothing there. The dr has given eye drop cream to put up there with a cotton bud and some antihistamine to take every morning (clarityn) but it hasn't got any better. HELP! please!

Brief Answer:
Most likely an allergic rhinitis

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Thanks for the query

I do understand your concern. After going through the detail history I would like to rule out allergic rhinitis. In this condition the child frequently rubs his nose (also known as allergic salute).
Here giving antihistamine like clarityn, nasal steroid spray, leukotriene antagonist like montelukast helps.
The condition is usually precipitated by environmental allergens.I suggest you to try to find out any allergen if possible. It can be dust, pollens, pollutants etc.Avoidance of allergen is best way to control.
I am sorry to say but I am not able to understand the nature of medication you are applying locally with cotton bud.Usually steroid nasal spray or antihistamine nasal spray are prescribed to control the condition.
It may take few days for the symptoms to subside if treated properly.
If you are not satisfied with the treatment I suggest you to get a second opinion from ENT specialist.
I hope this helps.
Please let me know in case you have any more query.
Wishing for your child's good health.
Thanks and regards
