What Causes A Pimple Like Lesion At The External Urethral Orifice?
Question: Thank you. my 95 year old mother says she has a small pimple like inside the entrance of her urethra frequently causing pain in her side when she urinates; but is not the typical bladder infection - no burning pain from urine. these symptoms have manifested itself about every 3-4 days with no indication when the pain will come back. Mother is in general good health, mentally alert, independent living, however, a heart patient with daily meds. She limits her activities with frequent rests. I'm searching online as to what this might be since her GP's office is closed until January 2, and unable obtain a Rx for blood work and urinalysis. If/when the pain returns to unacceptable level, I will take her to the ER or emergency clinic.

If the pimple like lesion lies closer to the urethra then the diagnosis could most probably be a XXXXXXX duct cyst. This in my opinion is the more likely diagnosis. XXXXXXX duct cysts usually require surgical drainage when they present with symptoms, but sometimes just the use of antibiotics suffices. As your mother is quite elderly I do not recommend putting her through a lot of pain.
Another very common condition called Bartholin's cyst also presents in a similar manner with a pimple like swelling around the entrance of the vagina, usually on one side.
For now please do start with warm water compresses over the region several times a day, and also warm water sitz bathes with epsom salt in it in order to promote healing and reducing the size of the cyst.
