What Causes A Recurring Rash On The Body?

default
Posted on Tue, 29 Nov 2016
Question: Hello: My husband has been having reoccurring rash suddenly this weekend . It is very disturbing , as he is also very allergic to shellfish and penicillin; we always have an epipen with us. He has been treating it with benadryl and corisone cream (according to his doctor). I have wondered if it could be caused by reaction to meds he is taking . He takes both Flonase and omeprazole , and today I saw online that Flonase should not be taken with ....prazole drugs and that it can have the side effect of rashes , itching and anaphylaxis. Should he stop the Flonase?

Did the doctor answer the question? I find no answers in my email?

Brief Answer:
No allergy from the combination but can be from Omeprazole alone or other

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thank you for using HCM to post your health query.
I read carefully your question and I understand your concern.

Flonase is a steroid and the steroids are used to treat allergy.
Allergy from Omeprazole is very very uncommon, and can happen despite the combination with Flonase. This would be the case of your husband, if he has started to use Omeprazole lately. But if he has been using it for a long time, then he cant be allergic from it suddenly.

On the other side he may be allergic from other things he have touched or eaten this weekend. I agree with the treatment of his doctor. Use the epipen and go to the ER if the symptoms get worse (especially if he has numbness and swelling in the respiratory ways).

Hope this is helpful.

Thank you ; however, I am most concerned about the Flonase. I read that rash and anaphalaxis can be a side effect of this nasal spray, which we did not know . So, I wonder if he should stop taking it , as the symptoms keep reoccurring every day.

Brief Answer:
The best way to know for sure is to do the allergy tests.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear,

Thank you for the follow-up question.

Flonase does not give allergy. But the components that it has may give, if those components are the first time that your husband has been in contact.
Also, if these components are the ones that are causing the allergy he should be careful to take other drugs which has these components as part of their composition. But this is an information that you will not know for sure unless you do the allergy tests and check what it is that your husband is allergic off.

So in other words, my conclusions is that it is very very little possible that Flonase is the drug which gives the allergy. But to know that for sure, he can make a test of not taking it for some day and see if gets better. Or he can do the allergy tests.

Hope I have answered your question and clarified you.

Dr. Papaqako
