What Causes A Sudden Occurrence Of Bleeding After A Long Cessation Of Menstruation?

Posted on Tue, 19 Apr 2016
Question: I am a 49 year old woman, and I am Caretaking for my husband who is a Glioblastoma patient. To say I have stress is an understatement, but to the point. My periods stopped 11 months ago, and I have a family history of menopause. A lighter version of my period started last month, lasting for 3 to 4 days. Any thoughts?

Brief Answer:
Do one TVS scan. Need further evaluation.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for writing to us in this platform.

Literally, menopause is defined as complete cessation of menstrual period for 12 or more months continuously. It typically occurs between 45 and 55 years of age.

In peri-menopausal age group, irregular bleeding or period may occur due to mental stress and hormonal imbalance. However, any kind of bleeding or sudden occurrence of period after a long time cessation (11 months in your case) should be investigated in right way.

Here, we need to rule out some underlying causes like endometrial hyperplasia, polyp and cancerous changes (if any) through pelvic and speculum examination along with colposcopy (if indicated).

One Trans Vaginal Ultrasound scan (TVS) is recommended at the initial phase. Endometrial thickness should be measured. Pap smear test to detect cancerous changes and endometrial biopsy may be required additionally.

I suggest you to consult with your gynecologist for clinical examination, above mentioned tests and proper treatment (if required). It will be more helpful.

Hope, it helps for your information. Kindly, close the discussion if you don't have any other query.

Regards,
