What Causes Abdominal Bloating And Loss Of Eyelashes While On Synthroid?
I have been bloated for a year and a half and none of the medication prescribed to me has worked. I have no gluten intolerance (as per the result of my test). I have been losing a lot of eyelashes too in the past few weeks. I did many tests over the course of the last couple of years and all seem to point out to hashimoto but nothing to what could be the cause of my bloating. I am currently on synthroid. Besides the medication for bloating I also took medication for hormonal imbalance but my latest blood tests (done last month) came back normal. My menstrual cycle though has not been regular.
GERD, Dyspepsia, Endoscopy
Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome
I appreciate your concern
Menstrual irregularity is expected with hypothyroidism. Synthroid is the correct treatment for hashimoto thyroiditis.
As far as the bloating and dyspepsia is concerned, it indicates GERD (Gastro esophageal reflux disease). PPI like esomeprazole, pro kinetic such as metoclopramide along with bismuth subsalicylate and sucralfate can be advised for a duration of two weeks as empiric treatment. If the symptoms persist despite maximum treatment with PPIs i.e 40 mg twice a day for 2 weeks then upper GI endoscopy should be considered to look for other possibilities including gastrinoma, helicobacter pylori infection etc

Thank you for your answer. I was told by another doctor that the bloating could be related to hashimoto disease therefore an adjustment of the dose of synthroid should result in a decrease of bloating. What are your thoughts on that? Do you agree or do you think it is most probably GERD? Thank you.

Hello again.
Yes, low thyroid levels can lead to constipation. Adjustment to correct the thyroxine levels would potentially lead to resolution of the constipation.
GERD in itself doesn't directly cause constipation. However, its often companied by constipation.
