Can Person With Coeliac Disease Take Morning After Pills?
Hi. I took the morning after pill (levonelle) after having unprotected sex but have been reading more about it and it says you shouldn t take it if you have a condition which effects gut absorption. I have Coeliac disease, but have been on a gluten free diet for 15 years. Should I be worried?

General & Family Physician, Dr. Priyanka's Response
Hi,
It is recommended to consult with your doctor or pharmacist before taking any medication, including emergency contraception like Levonelle, especially if you have any underlying medical conditions. Coeliac disease can affect the absorption of nutrients from the gut, including medications, and it is possible that this could potentially impact the effectiveness of the morning-after pill.
However, being on a gluten-free diet for 15 years suggests that you have been managing your coeliac disease well, and your doctor or pharmacist may be able to advise you on whether this would affect the efficacy of the Levonelle. They may also be able to recommend an alternative form of emergency contraception if necessary. It is important to always follow the instructions and advice provided with any medication to ensure its effectiveness and safety.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Priyanka, General & Family Physician
