What Causes Abdominal Pain And Diarrhea After Treatment Of Flu?
My 9 yr old son was treated for flu symptoms(vomiting included) Sunday at our Urgent Care Clinic. Seemed better Monday evening but started with diarrhea yesterday and abdominal pain. Again, seemed better yesterday evening but woke up today with abdominal pain. Is this normal to have continued abdominal pain after the worse symptoms have passed? He describes pain as all over abdomen, not low right or anything - He is belching, no BM today tho - He was treated for H Pylori ulcer when he was 3 - ever since we've been told he may experience acid reflux and to give prevacid - maybe this is just reflux on top of recovering from flu?
Viral illness abdominal pain cramping normal
Detailed Answer:
Thanks for contacting HCM with your health care concerns.
Your son has been having a viral illness for the past 3 days and has been treated with Tamiflu and Zofran. He has been getting overall better until this morning when he had severe abdominal pain and cramping. This maybe ongoing pattern from his viral illness. Since he has general pain and not localized there is less concern for appendicitis or other serious GI disease. If you have not already done I recommend a BRAT diet and GI rest. Bananas, Rice, Applesauce and dry toast. Give him plenty of fluids, Gatorade is a good option, to prevent dehydration. If his pain does not improve, if he develops fever or uncontrollable vomiting then he will need to be re-evaluated at the urgent care or ER.
In summary
1. Abdominal pain secondary to viral illness
2. BRAT diet
3. Plenty of fluids
4. return to ER if symptoms worsen
