What Causes Abnormal Vaginal Bleeding While On Eliquis?

default
Posted on Fri, 14 Apr 2017
Question: I am 63 years old, 10 years post menopausal, and began using Eliquis 1 week ago. Thursday night approx 1800 hours I began noticing vaginal bleeding. I don't currently have a gynecologist. I don't know whether to beg my way in to a doctor tomorrow as if this is emergent, or whether getting a "regular" appointment next week is soon enough. I am more than a little freaked-out because my 95 year old mother is in late-stage ovarian cancer status...just recently diagnosed, and it was discovered because she had unexpected vaginal bleeding...

Brief Answer:
Consult Gynecologist at the earliest.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome to Healthcare Magic.
I am Dr Ramadevi Wani. I will be answering your concerns.

It is unlikely that Eliquis is the cause of this bleeding. There are several reasons for the bleeding that you have had.
It could be due to
1. Atrophic vagina
2. Endometrial hyperplasia
3. Endometrial or cervical polyp
4. Uterine cancer - This is the cause in 1% of women having postmenopausal bleeding.

Please do not start worrying from now on. 99% of times the bleeding is due to causes other than cancer.
Please fix an appointment with gynecologist for examination, ultrasound and biopsy to find out the cause for bleeding.
If you can get appointment in a week's time, it is okay.
If you have further concerns, do write to me. I will be happy to answer.

Regards,
Dr Rama
