What Causes Acute Shivering Along With High Fever And Cold?

default
Posted on Wed, 11 Mar 2015
Question: Hi, i had acute shivering last saturday with mild fever and acute cold. The doctor said it was viral and would settle on its own. The doctor prescribed Allegra 120 and Montair LCZ . Post taking the medicine the cold subsided and fever would settle below 100degrees . However i was taking Calpol 650 as SOS. However from today the fever has started increasing upto 103 degrees and i have strong shivering alongwith high fever and cold. Can you pls suggest appropriate medicine since i think the situation has worsened with this now becoming bacterial infection and not getting controlled with the prescribed medicines.

Request your advice. Thanks XXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Blood, urine routine and platelet count should be done.

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thank you for asking Health care magic forum.

I have gone through your query. As your fever is again increasing, it can be due to a secondary bacterial infection. Do you have yellowish sputum or yellow nasal discharge? In such case bacterial infection is most likely and antibiotics will be required.

If fever is 3 days and more than that you should go for a blood and urine routine and platelet count. In case of hemorrhagic fever like dengue platelet will be decreasing. So that should be ruled out. Bacterial infection signs also can get from blood routine.

If bacterial respiratory infection and you were my patient i would recommend taking antibiotic like azithromycin or Co-amoxiclav.

Adequate rest should be taken. You should also take warm fluids. Taking warm chicken soup with pepper is good. You can also take tea with lemon and take chewable vitamin C.

Hope this may help you. Let me know if anything not clear.
Thanks

Brief Answer:
Hi and Welcome.

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for your follow up query.

If there is increase in monocytes it can be viral fever like infectious mononucleosis caused by epstein barr virus. In such case initially antibiotics are not required but if secondary bacterial infection is there then antibiotics will be required. In such case i would advise antibiotics like Azithromycin 3 to 5 days. It is not allowed to prescribe drugs here. You can approach your treating doctor for this.

Dehydration will be characteristic for this. You should take rest and have lot of fluids. Paracetamol , anti histamines like cetrizine will be helpful for relieving symptoms. Platelet count should be repeated also. If platelet count is normal then you can take NSAID drugs like nimusulide with your doctors advise which will control your fever and symptoms than paracetamol.

If you can't take fluids and dehydration is present then Hospitalization is necessary for intravenous fluid administration.

Hope this may help you. Let me know if anything not clear.
Thanks.

Brief Answer:
Can be due to sinusitis.

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thank you for your follow up query.

It can be due to sinusitis. An examination with ENT specialist will rule out this. Local nasal decongesants like Oxymetazoline and antibiotics (azithromycin or Co-amoxiclav) will be helpful for this. Taking vitamin C chewable form everyday will be helpful also to get rid off sinus problem.

Hope this may help you. Let me know if anything not clear.
If you are clear please rate my advise.
Thanks.
