What Causes Acute Weight Gain, Hair Loss And Decrease In Energy Levels?

Question: I noticed a sharp weight gain over the past 9 months . I am someone who has never had weight fluctuations, but was now 120lbs, up from the 105lbs that I had been for most of my life. No dietary changes were able to reverse it. This "symptom" was accompanied by a significant rate of hair loss. I also felt a decrease in my energy levels. It started to get my attention, and as a first step decided to take the supplement Actalin. After about ten days I noticed that the accelerated rate of hair loss seemed to be diminishing, and after 2 weeks i had lost 6 of the 15 pounds that I had gained, and my energy levels seemed to be more in my normal ranges. Though anecdotal, this suggests to me that this supplement works for me. Should I continue on in this way? I have just gotten T3,T4, and THS tests run on my blood, and if there is no abnormality, is there any harm in just continuing to take the Actalin daily?

I ought to add that before I had the blood work done this morning, I discontinued taking the Actalin for 8 days, hoping that I would get truer results if I was not currently taking the supplement. I don't know if that was sufficient time to make a difference, but since I felt its initial effects so quickly, i guessed that forgoing it for a week or so would have some value for the tests accuracy.

Brief Answer:
You should avoid Actalin

Detailed Answer:
Welcome To HCM. I am Dr Anshul Varshney. I understand your concern.
Actalin is going to help you in weight loss by disturbing your thyroid hormones. It is indicated only in case where a person either has overt Hypothyroidism or even Subclinical Hypothyroidism.
I would recommend you the supplement if your thyroid workup is normal.
There have been cases where people consuming these thyroid supplements for various purposes with out any thyroid disorder developed Hyperthyroidism.
So, it is not an approved drug for weight loss.
Exercise regularly and you be able to loose weight by the natural ways only.
Moreover you can take help of Orlistat which is an approved drug for weight loss.
For generalized weakness and tiredness you should get your Hemoglobin, iron, calcium and vitamin D levels checked.
So in nutshell this supplement I would not recommend you.
I hope it helps.
If you have any further query, please ask me.

I have not explained well enough what my general condition tends to be. I am 69 years old but I am in very good shape. I get between 1 and 4 hours of vigorous exercise daily. I am an avid tennis player, and in the summer I have matches at the very least 5 times a week. The weight was not my primary concern. However combined with the hair loss ,and tiredness,I began to be concerned that my thyroid might be involved. All of the symptoms diminished considerably when I began taking the supplement. I understood Actalin to be a dietary supplement rather than a medication , whose function was to support a healthy thyroid. Are you of the opinion that it is unhealthy for me to continue with it?

Brief Answer:
Get investigated.

Detailed Answer:
Hi, It's not that Actalin will help you in sudden weight loss, You achieved weight loss because of your good physical activities. You are just giving the credit to Actilan.
I personally don't prefer to give Actalin to my patients until and unless they are suffering from Hypothyroidism or Subclinical Hypothyroidism in which the treatment is not indicated.
As far as hair loss is concerned, many micro nutrients deficiency play a role in it. So, you might have overcome that nutrient deficiency using Actalin. So, you should may take a good multivitamin supplement for that purpose, instead of taking a supplement that contains Iodine.
Get your iron profile, repeat thyroid profile , Calcium and Vitamin D levels, to check for the deficiencies that might be causing hair loss.
I hope it helps.
Stay healthy.
