What Causes An Altered Sense Of Taste?

default
Posted on Wed, 7 May 2014
Question: My wife and I just returned from Thailand about two weeks ago. For the last 5 days or so, I have had this strange taste in my mouth. It almost has a menthol quality to it. I it very apparent when I eat or drink and changes the taste of things. Today, I woke up with a stomach ache, and I feel a bit weak and nauseous. I dont appear to have a fever, but I feel like i do. I have also noticed increased nasal congestion. I recently had a root canal performed on one of my canines. So....is it sinusitis, some strange thing I contracted in Thailand, or some strange new condition? Please help!

Brief Answer: non specific viral infection Detailed Answer: Hi Welcome to Healthcare-magic Greetings of the day Its quite likely to be prodromal symptoms of non-specific viral infection. In the absence of rash and high grade fever there is no cause for concern. Its unlikly you contracted anything in Thailand. Majority of infection have incubation period ( time interval between exposure to infective agent and development of clinical symptoms)of less than 2 weeks, its unlikely you have contracted anything from thailand. I would advise you the following 1. Warm saline gargling 2. plenty of oral fluids 3. warm liquids like soup Do get back to me if you need any further assistance Take care best regards Dr T Shobha Deepak MBBS,MD
