What Causes An Infant To Refuse Breast Milk Post Vaccination?

default
Posted on Mon, 12 Sep 2016
Question:
My 14 weeks daughter refusing breast feeding from yesterday and we are not sure why she is doing so. She is not very cranky also and manageable as of now. We are trying our best to breast feed her in every possible way. Please note that we are not giving her any formula and she is completely on breast feeding by birth.

3 days back we had taken her for 14 weeks vaccination and PCV-13, IPV, OPV 3rd dose, and DPWP2 injections are given at a time. As per the recommendation of the Pediatrician Sumo L Paracetamol 0.6ml is administered for every 6 hours 5 times.

Kindly let me know, the possible reasons for this and should we be really worried about it at this point of time.

Brief Answer:
It can happen due to the pain of DTwP vaccination.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

Children are supposed to be exclusively breast fed upto 6 months of age. It is good to hear that your child is exclusively breast fed. It is possible that due to the pain of DTwP the child is not feeding well. I would not really worry since you mention that she is not very cranky and is manageable. In such a case I am sure that she would be feeding well once again soon. Unless she grows lethargic I would not worry. But if that happens, you would need to take her to your doctor.

Monitor the urine output. If the child passes urine more than 6 times in 24 hours, you should know that there is nothing to worry.

Thank you Diptanshu for your answer.

We also initially thought it as an effect of DTwP vaccination as the doctor mentioned it is a painful injection. But the portion where the injection was given looks absolutely normal and even if we touch and press that portion she is not reacting back by crying.

Can this be because of colic? We have anyways given her 0.2 ml of colicaid drops before trying to breast feed her.

But her intake of milk has reduced and my wife can feel pain in her breast because of the excess milk.

We will monitor her urine output as mentioned by you.

Brief Answer:
Things should be fine again soon.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back.

Even if the site is apparently not painful, I feel that it is probably due to the temporary change is situation due to DTwP vaccination. Things should be back to normal in a day or two.

I doubt if it is due to colic. You should hold the baby head up on your lap for about 15-20 mins (burping) to avoid development of colics. I do not think that giving 0.2ml Colicaid with each feed is necessary. Rather, give 0.5 ml Colicaid when actually necessary.

I am sure that in a day or two things would be back to normal.

Feel free to write back.

Thanks for responding back.

As suggested, we will wait and see the progress for couple of days.

Just to clarify, we are not giving 0.2 ml colicaid between each feed. We have just given one shot of 0.2 ml today. We would have hardly given it 3 times so far from birth snd everytime we give it is just 0.2 ml.

Brief Answer:
Feel free to ask me back in case of further queries

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back. No issues with Colicaid, it is just not necessary. Just give it when the child cries uncontrollably.

I hope things would be fine soon.
