What Causes Bad Breath In A Child?
Question: Hi doctors. I would like to ask a question about my 2 yr old son. his mouth stinks very bad when he wakes up after his sleep in night & Even when he sleeps for an hour or two in the noon.
I always brush his teeth twice a day (before going to sleep in night & in the morning). He keeps his mouth open while sleeping. would this be the reason? but it stinks only since last 7-8 months.
What may be the reason doctors!?

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for writing this.
Usually bad breath at this age could be due to various causes
1. Food particles present in mouth get digested by acid and bacteria result ing in bad breath. Brush well with circular motions twice daily.
Change baby brush every 3 months. Use low fluoride paste like kidodent.
2. Tonsils, caries, etc Needs a general examination. A dental checkup is mandatory for your kid.
3. Acid reflux is common at this age which will settle soon. Give more solids and less milk.
4. Bottle and thumb sucking should be restricted
Wishing your child good health.
