What Causes Bilateral Renal Cortical Scarring Involving Both Upper Poles? Discovered By Ultrasound
Question: What causes bilateral renal cortical scarring involving both upper poles? This was discovered via Ultra Sound with everything else within normal range but right kidney was smaller than the left. Had scarring on both kidneys.
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The mild variation in the size of both kidneys is a physiological variation. There is nothing worrisome about it.
Bilateral renal cortical scarring can happen due to recurrent urinary infections, diabetes, chronic hypertension, pyelonephritis, glomerular disease, microinfarcts of the kidneys, etc.
You need to monitor your renal functions to know whether this scarring is significant or not.
Renal biopsy is the only way to confirm the exact cause.
Hope this answers your query. I will be glad to answer the follow up queries that you have.
