What Causes Black Discolouration In Stool While On Minocycline And Doxycycline?
I have been on minocycline 50mg twice a day for about a month now and I was on doxycycline for 3 weeks prior to that for the treatment of acne along with retin a. I have noticed in the last couple of days or so that my stools have been almost black like in appearance. I am unsure if this is bad or if it has to with the minocycline? I haven't really been taking it with food lately should I be doing so and should I go back to my local gp to get it checked out? I don't have any problems passing stools or anything but it kind of worries me. I also take vitiam c tablets from time to time but that's about it.
Kind Regards,
Daniel
Take Pro biotic.
Detailed Answer:
Welcome To HCM. I am Dr Anshul Varshney. I understand your concern.
Minocycline or Doxycycline both belongs to Tetracycline group of antibiotics and are known to cause severe gastritis , stomach upset, loose stools and even black colored stools.
So, I would recommend you a stool for occult blood test that would come up with any blood in stool.
If that report is negative then this is just because of Minocycline or Doxycycline.
For this you should take Omeprazole and a good pro biotic along.
I hope it helps you.
If you have any further query, please ask me.
Brief Answer:
Yes continue with Minocycline
Detailed Answer:
Hi, yes you can continue taking Minocycline and prefer to take it with food as well.
You may consider taking any Pro biotic available like Vizylac or Darolac. Yes, you may also take Yakult as well.
I hope it helps.
Stay healthy.
