What Causes Black Outs After Eating?

Question: I have "blackout episodes" after I eat. When my blood sugar level has been tested after each episode it is within the normal range or even a little higher. I do not have diabetes. My routine blood work has been normal. A glucose tolerance test was also normal

Brief Answer:
may be related to blood pressure
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your query. I understand your concerns.
This appears to be due to fall in blood pressure after meals due to rerouting of blood to the intestine. This may happen in Diabetes but also in brain disease and sometimes just because of the age. Diabetes has been ruled out in you. Have you checked blood pressure during the episodes?
The possible remedies include having small meals at a time, avoiding blood pressure meds before meals, lying down after meals and if required, taking caffeine as a medicine. You should discuss these with your doc.
Hope this helps. I will be available to answer further follow up queries, if any.

Thank you. I do not eat large meals. Today I had a lettuce salad with about three ounces of stir fry steak and some lite Italian dressing and some pita chips. I had a half a glass of wine. I again went through an episode. I live alone so I took my blood pressure with a wrist cuff. The number were 120 71 and 80 for pulse
Brief Answer:
May need in-hospital assessment
Detailed Answer:
Thanks for followup.
We need to get the BP exactly when the symptoms happen (during the blackout). I don't think it is possible for you alone. It may be necessary to get you admitted for 1-2 days in hospital and evaluate thoroughly during the episode. That will clinch the diagnosis.
If the diagnosis of this post-meal syncope (blackout) is confirmed, then appropriate meds can be started.
Regards
