What Causes Black Stool With Mild Pain In Lower Abdomen?
Question: I have started taking iron tablets and have very black stools. The side effects say that this is normal. Also I have been passing large black stools at least 3 times a day which is unusual for me. I have mild pain in my lower back and bottom of my stomach. Is there any need to see a doctor soon.
Brief Answer:
Needs investigation immediately

Hello XXXXXXX
Though black stools while taking iron supplements is normal, it is very unusual to have pain in the lower back and bottom of stomach.
I could see that you are already on codein plus acetaminophen. Did you take any over the counter pain killers recently or earlier to co codamol? You have erosive gastritis and I suspect it can bleed into the gut any time. The mucosal lining would be irritated with iron supplements.
The new symptoms calls for an investigation as soon as possible.
You should see a doctor as quickly as possible.

Thanks for this information Doctor. It is a bank holiday today in the UK. Can I wait until Tuesday to see a doctor or do you suggest that I go to A&E. In other words should I stop taking any tablets today and is there any threat to me by waiting 24 hours.
thanks XXXXXXX
