What Causes Bleeding From Retina?

default
Posted on Wed, 3 Jun 2015
Question: Hello. i had an eye examination yesterday and they took pictures of the back of my eyes i.e. the retina. In one eye there appears to have been some bleeding and this has left some small marks. It is well away from the optic nerve and central part of the retina. My B.P.is 139/78. Will these marks be re-absorbed and could the bleeding be caused by lifting a heavy weight. I am 61 and walk briskly for half an hour a day.
Thanks.
P.S. The optician said it is not bleeding now and I don't have any 'floaters'

Brief Answer:
These bleeding spots can be caused by increased blood pressure.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Welcome to Health care Magic

I am Dr. Dadapeer K, an ophthalmologist and I will be answering your question.

I reviewed your history.

The small bleeding spots are usually seen in people with hypertension and diabetes. Since you are having increased blood pressure, you need to get evaluated to rule out hypertension and it is possible that these bleeding spots are caused by hypertension.
These will be re absorbed and will not cause much problem.
However the blood pressure needs to be well controlled and frequently monitored.

Lifting heavy weights or brisk walk will not lead to small bleeding spots.
Floaters are usually seen in massive bleeding and bleeding into the vitreous cavity, which lies infront of the retina. The retinal bleeding spots will not cause this problem.
If possible do send me the pictures taken so that I can review them and advice you accordingly.

Hope this information is helpful to you.

Do write back to me for further questions.

Thank you
With regards
