What Causes Incomplete Retinal Formation In One Eye Of A Newborn?

i am writing a paper for my A & P class and our professor described a condition to us of a newborn infant. he wants us to tell him what conditions could account for the issues he described...not neccessarily to completely diagnose it. the only symptoms provided include that upon birth a newborn demonstrates normal spinal reflexes but upon pupil examination, the right eye responds properly but the left eye does not. upon a more thorough examination it is determined that the retina of the left eye is incomplete. it is also noted that the left eyes pupil sits medial and superiorly to the right eyes pupil. Could this be coloboma? It is a nervous system assignment so i am inclined to think more along the lines of cranial nerve damage, specifically the optic nerve - maybe optic nerve hypoplasia?

Pediatrician 's  Response
Hi,

Incomplete retinal formation most commonly happens in preterm babies, and is called ROP (retinopathy of prematurity). This happens from oxidative stress on the premature retina.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Muhammed Aslam T. K., Pediatrician
