What Causes Blood Clot And High ALT Level After Shoulder Surgery?
Question: I recently got a blood clot after a should surgery. The blood test came back with an ALT of 84 Unit/L, which was marked as High. How concerned should I be?

ALT is a liver enzyme. It has nothing to do with blood clot. ALT 84 is only slightly elevated what can be caused by regular pain killers intake or alcohol intake. For sure it is not the reason to be concerned. You just should change your diet a little (avoid pain killers, fatty foods, spicy foods, alcohol) and recheck liver tests after a month.

As a follow-up from my clot, I do plan on going to a Hemotologist (spelling?) and having my blood work run again.
My question is related to an ALT value of 84. What you say above is that that value is only slightly elevated, correct? At what value would a person need to be really concerned, and say never consume alcohol again (my surgery pain is gone, so the need to take pain killers is completed). Since it is summer season, can I not ever have a few beers at a BBQ again??

Usually in case of serious liver disease ALT gets around 1000. Your result is not even half close to that. So really no need to worry.
Alcohol is for people. Same with BBQ. The point is to do not drink or have BBQ too often. Liver has great abilities to regenerate, but if the destroying factor keeps repeating, it wont get enough time for regeneration.
So if you can stop painkillers or at least decrease the amount of them that will be fine. If you do not drink day by day, alcohol every few days is also fine.
